Design - The Green Book

Proof of Concept,
The concept (a 50 page prototype) is complete, although it is under constant critique and could change. The Green book was an amazing journey and I wish I could continue on that same path. I will work on it again but for now it will stay very much the way it is—a product of experience. It contains an outstanding interview with Kelly form Endless biking and a group interview with 5 individuals form the NS Ride mountain bike society in Vancouver. It ends with a spread introducing Scott form Secret Cycle and one of his ever so interesting quotes. The book is complete with maps and podcasts to compliment the great first ride experience stories. The stories of course are the springboard that will inspire you and get you off the couch on and onto your bike. The trails of Vancouver North Shore Want you there. I should thank Matt from Emdoubleyu Design for mentoring the project and Dan at NSMBA for getting the ball rolling with some of the great names in the Vancouver mountain bike scene including but not limited to Jay at Norco, Kelly at Endless, Brian, Euan, Michelle, and Sheldon at NS ride, Scott at Cove (Secret), Jeff at Specialized, Grant at Obsession, the great photo's on loan from Euan and Sterling, and everyone who made the project possible and inspiring. It was Inspiring to say the least.

I would love to hear what you think of the images posted and if you are in the Vancouver area and want to see the book - I am always available to have a coffee and talk about bikes.

Illustration - East Van Cultural Crawl

The East Vancouver Cultural Crawl was inspiring, this is a sketch of a Robinson Sculpture that was amazing. If you missed the crawl this year you missed out, the only good thing is that it will most likely happen again in a year from now. The artists open their studios, there is food and drinks, great music, and amazing things to enrich your cultural experience. I am happy it inspired me to get my sketchbook out again, this is a bit of the mess I made.

Illustration - Field Guide for Biker Identification

So you are pedaling your sorry butt to work, to school, or to where-ever you feel the need to get to. As you pedal you see others spinning along the same roads and trails. Momentum Magazine had a group of writers come up with the field guide outlining the details of these individuals. I was part of putting those well written descriptions into a visual form. If any of these characters somehow resemble you it is strictly a coincidence - unless of course you have a big nose, carry some extra weight around the middle and your back hunches as if you have been mopping floors for 50 years - in which case I saw you on Adanac bike route.

I was talking about my work with a publisher, casual of course and he was looking through some old stuff. This was a big part of the conversation - Ralph. I did this Ralph image about 4 years ago. It is full of content, context and interesting form. I don't know if I ever really thought much of it other then it was an exersice in Alberta politics. Something I don't claim to know all that much about. Maybe I will do more of this - James Joyce would.

Drawing Installation

Working on this drawing installation with Mark and Jakub last year was great, we created a bazzar experience by putting the viewer in very tight quarters - actually having to crawl in to see it - it had a annoyingly wonderful sound track that further added to the experience, and then when you actually got to the drawings you viewed them through a small dark window in the structure we built, It was up at Emily Carr for one day - who would have thought drawing would be so interestingly different.

It has been a while since putting up a drawing and this one has been posted before as a line drawing, but I was playing with some layers and some masks. My goal was to not make it look like a typical photoshop illustration but something much more organic. Photoshop filters used in pure form should be outlawed, I am hoping no-one feels this image should be outlawed. Let me and Little Johnny Ford know what you think.

Design - ALS

I have been thinking more about the value of the design process, and that process keep bringing me back to this project for ALS. It's strange that at the time I was feeling very frustrated about the project and I am still not completely comfortable about the final deliverable but what I can say is that the process was and remains solid. It is I suppose - part of the learning curve - it will only get stronger and the final outcomeit turn - more solid. I wanted to also post 2 more images from that project - pieces that should or potentially could communicate the idea of a Network (community) of hope which makes up the BC charity ALSBC....an identity that if committed to by the non-profit group - would give them the staying power they are looking for within the charitable hierarchy in British Columbia. This identity would develope over time into something much more then just some purple people - but an identity. The Identity they are lacking.

It is the start of my final year at ECI and I am looking to self direct my own communication ideas. The ALS project was a good experience in starting with a proposal and running it through to final product. The poster above was part of that project. Jim and Mel were my partners in the crime - this year will be a solo show. I am hoping to have a mentor or two to help keep me on track to a successful project. I am also thinking of self promotional ideas that could include T-shirts and Illustration, I will keep this blog posted and at the same time the 2 or 3 people that visit it - cheers

Design - Urban Lonsdale

I was looking at the last few posts and they have been heavy on the illustration, some old some new - I guess there is nothing wrong with that but, its time for design. I spent some time exploring Lonsdale and the North Shore and the history is rich here. I put together a series of Magazine ads promoting the community. I wanted it to reflect the history and the call to a new life. Almost a homesteading flavour yet in a contemporary form. I find the form interesting and the depth of the Type reflects the history which I am trying to learn more about. Lonsdale seems to be in this call to community mode again, it could be because real estate is insane and everyone is calling you, but I want to think that it could be vancouvers next walkable, sustainable community,- Let me know what you think of Lonsdale.

My alter ego (one of many) Des Burns is seen here on some mag covers from the past. Des was a pro racer ripping up the wooden tracks of NewYork, Chicago, and Toronto when racing was hardcore and photo finishes and registration was all analog.

You can never look at the Masters enough, I can always learn and be inspired by looking at the lines, the ways in which they represented form and shape, and mass, etc.... I was drawing in a sketch book and this is what happened, I will have to tell you about my trip to the British Museum in London some day, it sends chills down my back just thinking of it - here's to history.

The Sustainable show was nice, that is about all I can say, some great things to see and some interesting things on the horizon with the flavour of sustainablity all over it. Emily Carr was nice enough to set up some students with a booth and I was fortunate to be able to participate, I am thankful for the opportunity - the downer is that my magazine was stolen from the show - a one off, over priced, recycled paper printed, portfolio material, type magazine. If it is sitting on you coffee table you owe me $48 mother%$#&%@&!^()#er

This was such a fun project from about 2 years ago but I go back to this character to tell stories, his name is Little Johnny Ford and the story is about the idea of Ford making a Cadillac, its all done in paint on canvas, and bound together as a book, The texture in the object is where the real value is here specifically, the type and design is where I have focused my creative juices since that time, my passion for stories and texture remains the same. Seems like a good combination to me.

Jim and I have been working on a project for a Canadian Association of Music Therapy and the experience has been great, this is the cover and I will post a bit more once the rest has been finalized, Jim looked after the Photography, we both shared a mutual art direction and I looked after the Masthead, we had a couple versions but this is the one the association liked.

This is a cover design for a Hemlock Printers checklist for bridging the desktop process to the printing process, It was a great project and the only downer was this cover ended on up on the cutting room floor. I wanted to reflect the history of the company and the craft that is perhaps taken for granted. Maybe a bit to gritty for blanketing the design world - I guess you learn from your mistakes.....don't take chances, stay in the box, and play it safe.......simple eh?

One looks alot like someone I know and the other is influenced by a roommate in Italy....only a few will know what that means. A long time ago I was asked to design a collection of stamps with birds as a theme, by the end of the project I was getting a bit tired of birds - the little feathered friends ended up as dead feathered friends - the collection looked something like this, it was good fun and was one of my first attempts at using illustrator....I am getting better with age....slowly

I am sharing a cover design before its fully completed, feedback is welcome. I am posting it mainly to share my new favorite font. This is Prensa, an instructor at ECIAD introduced me. I have read up on Prensa and the designer Cyrus Highsmith; it is a font that is believed to stand the test of time. It's not a nose in the air type font but has the presence to get the same job done. MensHealth, Martha Stewart Living, and newspapers from El Universal in Mexico to La Prensa Gráfica in El Salvador have used it and Prensa won the citation of excellence from the international type competition, Bukva:Raz!. Anyways in an effort to get to know some fonts-well I have been looking to get to know Prensa.

A project I have been working on—keeping in tune with my interest in illustration, is a story that tells the reader a bit or a lot about George Orwell epending on the readers knowledge of Blair prior. It tells of his love of writing, his political passions and fears, it touches on his personal life and is filled with imagery from 1984 and Animal Farm. It has been a challenging and educational. I will eventually post a few spreads but I am looking at the typographical elements being worked out further before I show you more......here are few illustrations the are worked into the so called kids book for an older audience. I have posted a couple small drawings, these or just a sample of a pile of drawing that I have made over the last year in an attempt to map time. Time that specifically relates to commuting by bicycle in the city of Vancouver whether it happens to be to the store for bread and milk or a longer ride to school or work. I have used a simple outline of bike forms to replace text and in a sense replace a written truth, the truth of time to be more exact...., I will post another ever now and again just to enlighten the blog with a truth.....a simple truth. Each drawing is timed to be the exact amount of time equivalent to the commute time, hence the map of the commute....interesting....maybe?

After a few alterations to the character expression—to fit the story line better, I have here the final illustration for the magazine. Anyone heading to Vegas for the big bike show will be able to see it first and then it should be all ove BC by the start of October. I have met some amazing Jim's in my life - one in the music circle, another in the world of art, and another in the bike world, these guys all live and breath life with passion, everyone should follow suit.
